Student Testimonies Qualitative feedback from anonymous end of semester evaluations at the University of Iowa
General Education Literature:
"Chelsea is a wonderful professor and I would recommend her to everyone. Her class is unlike any English class I've taken in the way that I genuinely feel like it was worth my time. As a STEM major, I dread writing papers and doing analyses on readings. However, I can honestly say that I've improved in my critical thinking skills, analysis skills, reading, and, above all, writing. She is very willing to help on every assignment and I've never been afraid to go in and ask questions-- something extremely important to me as a student. Her class is not an easy A, but it's proved to be useful to me as a student. The skills I've learned this past semester have been and will continue to be useful in my future classes and career."
"Chelsea- I really enjoyed your class! You were a great teacher, and really helped me expand my knowledge about literature! I think all the small close readings in the beginning are very helpful in preparing for the big essays! Also, thank you for always helping me figure out my essays in your office hours! Having one-on-one feedback is very helpful to me!"
"Fantastic instructor. Very comfortable environment to not only learn but develop literary skills. Feedback was always helpful and she was never hard to contact for even short questions. Enjoyed this class despite the material."
"Burk utilizes creative activities and interesting discussion questions to challenge students to further their understanding of a text. I really enjoyed the wide variety of texts she had us read, all of which had common themes."
"I absolutely adored Chelsea in this class. She was an outstanding professor. I learned so many things that will be useful to me in the future. I loved breaking off into the big group. I didn't necessarily like the way the group discussion started at the beginning of the year because there was a lot of awkward silence. We tended to not understand some of the questions being asked but as the semester went on, she guided her questions in a different way which really helped us take off into our discussion. I would most definitely recommend this particular class to another classmate. I genuinely enjoyed coming to class every Tuesday and Thursday and I really want Chelsea to know how relatable she was and how she really cared about our learning. Thank you for a great semester."
"The most helpful assignment I think was when we did workshops in class for our papers. It made me see things in my work that I wasn't aware of. Getting others opinions was extremely helpful and made my papers stronger, I feel. I honestly liked the way you set up this class and all of the homework and readings. I felt that it was a lot at times with reading all of the books we read because of the larger chunks at times, but it was worth it because it helped me time manage. I also enjoyed how the large group discussion went. I'm generally a very quiet [person] and it scares me to speak up, if you didn't notice! So, this helped me get outside of my comfort zone and speak my mind and opinions in a very safe environment without feeling like I was going to be wrong. All in all, this class helped me a lot!"
